Algarve food guide: what to eat, where and when

Algarve food guide: what to eat, where and when

In the Algarve, cooking follows the sea and the season. Food is simple, grilled, generous with olive oil, coriander and lemon. Here is what to order without hesitation, and where to go.

Dishes to try at least once

  • Cataplana of fish or shellfish: fish and seafood steamed in a copper pan, made for sharing.
  • Grilled fish of the day: sea bream, sea bass, sardines in summer, served with potatoes and salad.
  • Amêijoas à Bulhão Pato: clams with garlic, coriander and white wine.
  • Arroz de marisco: rich seafood rice, usually for two.
  • Frango piri-piri: spicy grilled chicken, the family-safe choice.
  • Percebes: goose barnacles from the rocks, intensely marine, worth trying out of curiosity.
  • Almond sweets and Dom Rodrigo: Algarve pastry, with almond, fig and egg.

Where to eat: reading the right signs

A good local restaurant shows a few signals: a short menu, fish priced by weight of the day, a room full of Portuguese diners between 1pm and 2pm, and no photos of dishes at the entrance. Village tascas around Paderne and the grill houses along the Quarteira seafront are often better than the most visible terraces in tourist zones.

Markets

The market is the best way to cook in your rental: morning fish, seasonal fruit, cheese, olives, fresh bread. In Quarteira, the fish hall is an experience in itself. Inland, monthly markets mix farm produce with crafts.

What to drink

Algarve wines, long overlooked, have improved a lot: fresh whites and easy reds, often served by the glass. For refreshment, cold local beer goes with grilled food, and lightly sparkling vinho verde works perfectly at lunch. Without alcohol, try local orange juice, and a café curto to end the meal.

Mealtimes matter

Lunch is served between 12.30pm and 3pm, dinner rarely before 7.30pm, peaking around 8.30pm. In high season, at sought-after places, booking the day before changes everything. Many tascas close one day a week and during end-of-season holidays.

Two details that surprise visitors

The bread, olives and nibbles brought at the start of the meal (the couvert) are charged if you eat them: you can decline without any awkwardness. And fish is often priced by weight: ask the price per kilo before confirming your choice.

Eating well from your rental

Most of our homes have a full kitchen and a barbecue. A morning market run, grilled fish on the terrace in the evening, and you have the best meal of your holiday without leaving the house.
