Albufeira, Vilamoura, Quarteira or Paderne: where to stay in the Algarve?

Choosing your base often matters more than choosing your house. Twenty minutes apart, the central Algarve changes completely: a lively marina, an authentic village, a family beach or a historic centre. Here is how we help our guests decide.

Albufeira: the easy choice

Albufeira has everything close by: accessible beaches, shops open all year, restaurants for every budget, activities for children and quick transfers from Faro airport. The old town keeps its charm, while the Strip area is clearly more party-oriented. If it is your first Algarve trip, or if you travel with teenagers, Albufeira is the simplest base.

Choose it if: you want everything within reach without planning every outing.

Vilamoura: marina, golf and comfort

Vilamoura is more structured and more upmarket: a marina, golf courses, waterfront restaurants, well-kept residences and wide avenues. It is quiet by day, elegant in the evening, and Praia da Falésia is close.

Choose it if: you come for golf, a calm stay with good restaurants, or a long weekend without the crowds.

Quarteira: local life by the sea

Quarteira keeps its Portuguese-town character: fish market, a long seafront promenade, grill restaurants full of locals, a family beach. Value for money is often better than in Vilamoura, just a few minutes away.

Choose it if: you want the beach and authenticity without paying for the address.

Paderne: the authentic inland

Inland, Paderne offers a completely different stay: hills, olive trees, a Moorish castle, village taverns and deep quiet. The beach is about twenty minutes by car, so you need a vehicle, but in exchange you get a real change of scenery and often more spacious homes.

Choose it if: you are after quiet, nature, a house with a pool and genuine contact with local life.

Armação de Pêra: a wide beach and cliffs to the west

Armação de Pêra combines a long sandy beach, a family-friendly seafront and quick access to the spectacular coves further west. It is a good balance between moderate buzz and coastal beauty.

Choose it if: you want beach, coves and a calmer atmosphere than Albufeira.

Three questions to ask before booking

• Will you have a car? Without one, stay within walking distance of beaches and shops.
• Are you travelling with young children? Check the slope down to the beach, shade and pool safety.
• Are you after buzz or silence? Both exist in the Algarve, but rarely on the same street.
