The Algarve off season: why come in autumn, winter or spring

The Algarve has a very marked tourist season, but the region is worth visiting all year. Outside July and August you find quiet beaches, restaurants without queues, gentler rates and remarkable light. Here is what each period looks like.

September and October: the best compromise

The sea is at its most pleasant temperature of the year after a full summer of heat, the days are still long, and crowds drop from the second half of September. It is the ideal period to combine beach time, boat trips to the coves and evenings out without the crowds.

November to February: quiet and low rates

The Algarve winter is mild, with many sunny days and more frequent rain spells. Swimming in the sea becomes a sport, but everything else opens up: hiking the coastal trails, local markets, inland villages, golf in perfect conditions, long remote-working stays. It is also when spacious homes become most affordable.

One practical point: choose a well-heated home. Many houses in southern Portugal are designed for summer; check for heating or reversible air conditioning.

March to June: blossom and beautiful light

Spring is probably the best season for walking: green hills, almond trees, orange blossom, ideal temperatures. The beaches wake up gradually, the sea stays cool until June, and rates remain moderate outside school holidays.

What you have to accept

• cooler water for swimming in winter and spring
• shorter days from November to February

Worth knowing before booking
