Renting a villa with a private pool in the Algarve: how to choose wisely

Not all villas with pools are equal, and the decisive criterion is almost never the one you look at first. Here’s what really matters.

1. Is the pool heated? In the Algarve, the water in an unheated pool becomes pleasant from late May to early October. If you come in April, May, or October, a heated pool is not a luxury: it's the difference between a pool used every day and a decorative pool.

2. The terrace orientation A south-facing pool stays in the sun all day: ideal in spring, challenging in August. A southwest-facing terrace offers the best compromise, with sun in the afternoon and shade in the morning. Also check for natural shade or an umbrella: in July, you look for shade more than sun.

3. The actual distance from the beach A “5 minutes from the beach” can mean five minutes by car, on a winding road, with a saturated car park at 10 am. Look at the map, the exact name of the nearest beach, and whether parking is free. Inland (Paderne, Boliqueime, Alcantarilha), allow 15 to 25 minutes of travel, largely compensated by the calm and space.

4. The number of bathrooms, not just bedrooms For six or eight people, two bathrooms change everything. This is the primary source of frustration in feedback from family or friends' stays.

5. The budget according to the season Prices in the Algarve vary greatly: the same villa can double between May and August. If your dates are flexible, June and September offer the best weather/price/crowd equation. Also check the minimum number of nights, often higher in high season.

6. The details that matter Air conditioning in the bedrooms, private garage or parking, usable Wi-Fi for remote work, washing machine, barbecue, enclosed garden if you are traveling with young children or a pet. These elements, more than the surface area, determine daily comfort.

7. Who you rent from A local concierge answers the phone, knows the property, handles a water heater problem on Sunday, and recommends a restaurant not listed in any guide. This is an invisible criterion in photos, but decisive during your stay.
