Paderne: The Secret Village of the Algarve and its Moorish Castle

About twenty minutes from the beaches of Albufeira, Paderne is one of those villages that brochures forget. This is precisely what gives it its value: here, the Algarve is lived at the rhythm of the hills, orange trees, and late afternoon conversations in the square.

The Moorish Castle of Paderne Perched on a rocky spur above the Quarteira river, Paderne Castle dates from the 12th century. Built with rammed earth (the taipa technique), it is one of the seven castles on the Portuguese flag. It is accessed by a dirt road from the Paderne road, then on foot for a few hundred meters. Plan for good shoes, water, and come early in the morning or late in the day: there is no shade on the site.

The Roman bridge and the river Below the ruins, a medieval bridge (often called a Roman bridge) crosses the river. The path along the water is pleasant in spring, when the vegetation is still green and the cistus flowers. It's an easy hour-long round trip walk, ideal with children.

The village itself Paderne has a white church, facades lined with blue, a grocery store, two cafes, and a few restaurants where you can eat a cataplana or pork Alentejana style for the price of a starter in a resort. On Wednesday mornings, the local market is worth a visit for goat cheeses, figs, and honey from the serra.

When to go Spring (March to May) is the best time: the hills are green, the almond trees then the orange trees perfume the air, and temperatures remain mild for walking. Autumn also works very well. In July and August, book your castle visit before 10 AM.
