Watching French TV in the Algarve: fibre, IPTV, Starlink, Molotov, Canal+ — the guide

Going on holiday no longer means giving up your favourite programmes. Between the fibre broadband fitted in most rentals, the broadcasters' apps and take-anywhere streaming sticks, there are now several ways to watch French TV from the Algarve. Here is an honest guide to the options, their limits and the gear worth packing.

The foundation: a good internet connection

Every modern solution relies on the internet. In the Algarve, fibre is widely deployed in the towns (Albufeira, Vilamoura, Quarteira, Loulé) with speeds easily sufficient for HD streaming. Our rentals come with Wi-Fi; simply check the advertised speed on the listing if television matters to you.

In the more rural areas (Paderne, Algoz, Tunes), 4G/5G often takes over with good speeds. Some owners of secluded properties choose Starlink, satellite internet: quick to install, stable even far from everything, ideal for a country house. The service works in Portugal and is managed entirely online.

The broadcasters' legal apps

The simplest solution: nothing to install, just your logins.

• Molotov: most free French channels (TF1, France 2, M6...) live and on replay. A free account is enough, and the app works from within the European Union.
• MyCanal (Canal+): available to French subscribers travelling temporarily in the EU, under the European regulation on cross-border portability of online content services.
• Channel apps: TF1+, France.tv, Arte.tv, 6play — free and usable from Portugal, sometimes with a slightly different catalogue.
• Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video: your French subscription works while travelling in the EU; the catalogue may vary by country.

Worth knowing: this portability is designed for temporary stays. Services may ask you to reconnect from France after a long period abroad.

Gear worth packing

Your rental's TV doesn't have your apps? Two small devices fix that for a few dozen euros:

• Google Chromecast / Google TV: plugs into HDMI, casts from your phone or runs Molotov, MyCanal and Netflix directly.
• Amazon Fire TV Stick: same idea, with a dedicated remote. Handy if casting isn't your thing.

Remember to bring your login details (note them before leaving) and check the accommodation's TV has a free HDMI port — it does in all our rentals.

IPTV: beware of illegal offers

You will see 'IPTV' boxes promising thousands of paid channels for a few euros a month. These offers are illegal: they rebroadcast channels without rights, the services are regularly shut down by the authorities, and buyers can face penalties in several European countries. Our advice: stick to the official apps, which already cover most holiday needs.

There are, however, legal IPTV services, offered by operators or recognised platforms, carrying the channels they are licensed to broadcast.

What about a satellite dish?

Receiving French channels by satellite (Fransat, TNT Sat) is still possible in the Algarve, but requires a dish pointed at the right satellite — a heavy installation suited to year-round residents. For a holiday, the internet does it better, and more simply.

1. Check the rental's Wi-Fi (fibre in town, 4G/5G or Starlink in the countryside). 2. Install Molotov and your usual apps before leaving. 3. Slip a Chromecast or Fire TV Stick into your luggage. 4. Be wary of 'miracle' IPTV boxes: the legal solutions are enough.
