Spending the winter in the Algarve: weather, activities and Christmas markets

December, January and February are the quietest months of the year in the Algarve, but far from the least pleasant: the region remains one of the mildest winter destinations in Europe, with local life carrying on without interruption. Here is what a winter stay actually holds.
The weather month by month
In December, temperatures range between 10°C at night and 17°C in the afternoon, with around 5 hours of sunshine a day and about ten days of rain over the month. January is the coolest month (8°C to 16°C on average) but also one of the driest, with 6 hours of sunshine a day. In February, temperatures rise slightly (9°C to 17°C) and rain becomes rarer. In all three months, long spells of blue sky remain the norm: the Algarve keeps its reputation as the sunniest region in Portugal, even out of season.
The sea, on the other hand, cools noticeably: around 16 to 17.5°C depending on the month, which limits swimming to the bravest (or to wetsuit fans).
What stays open (and what closes)
Unlike resorts that hibernate completely, the Algarve's main towns (Faro, Albufeira, Portimão, Lagos, Tavira) stay genuinely lively all year round: markets, cafés, restaurants and most tourist sites remain accessible. Businesses most dependent on summer tourism (some beach restaurants, a few water activities) do, however, reduce their hours or close completely between November and March — best to check before making a special trip for one of them.
Christmas markets and the festive season
Contrary to a common belief, the Algarve does have its Christmas atmosphere: the Baixa Christmas market livens up Faro's historic centre, Portimão's sets up a 200-metre ice rink every year with biscuit-decorating workshops, and Carvoeiro's, by the beach, offers archery and a little tourist train. Lights go up in the centres of Faro, Portimão and Tavira from early December. For New Year's Eve, restaurants and hotels in Albufeira, Faro and Portimão hold dinners with entertainment and fireworks: the mood stays festive, far from the image of a sleepy region.
What to do in practice
Winter activities favour the outdoors and heritage rather than the beach: hiking on the coastal trails (Ponta da Piedade, Praia da Marinha), visiting inland villages (Monchique, Silves, Paderne), exploring the Ria Formosa Natural Park and birdwatching, or simply taking long walks on deserted beaches such as Praia da Falésia. It is also one of the best seasons for golf: the greens are in excellent condition and the courses much less busy than in summer.
The price advantage (and remote work)
This is the cheapest time of year to rent in the Algarve, with rates often half those of summer. Many travellers take advantage of it for long stays, a month or more, working remotely, rather than just a week: the mild climate, widely available fibre connection and lower cost of living make it an increasingly popular winter destination.
