A few simple checks are enough:

• The website shows clear contact details (phone, email address, legal notice).
• In Portugal, a legally let property has an Alojamento Local (AL) registration number.
• The cancellation terms and the deposit amount are set out in black and white.
• Payment is made by a secure method. Be wary if you are asked to pay outside the website, by an unusual method.
