Paderne Castle: visiting, walking and the Algarve's secret village

Paderne Castle: visiting, walking and the Algarve's secret village

About twenty minutes from the beaches of Albufeira, Paderne is one of those villages that brochures forget. That is precisely what gives it its value: here, the Algarve is lived at the rhythm of the hills, the orange groves and late-afternoon conversations in the square.

Paderne's Moorish castle

Perched on a rocky spur above the Ribeira de Quarteira, Paderne Castle dates from the 12th century, during the Almohad period. Built of rammed earth (the taipa technique), it is one of the seven castles shown on the Portuguese flag and has been listed as a Property of Public Interest since 1971. You reach it along a dirt track from the Paderne road, then on foot for a few hundred metres. Wear good shoes, bring water, and come early in the morning or late in the day: there is no shade on the site.

Paderne Castle: opening times and access

  • Access inside the walls is restricted: according to the Algarve tourist board, it opens on Wednesdays from 10am to 1pm in summer, and on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month in winter.
  • Albufeira Town Council also holds free open days on some Wednesdays (in September 2025, from 10am to 4pm, no booking needed).
  • As times can change, check before you go with Albufeira Town Council (+351 289 599 508).
  • Outside these times, you can walk around the walls and enjoy the view over the valley.
  • GPS coordinates: 37.156965, -8.200614.

The castle trail and the medieval bridge

Below the ruins, a three-arched bridge of medieval origin (often called the Roman bridge) crosses the river. The waymarked "Percurso do Castelo de Paderne" (ABF PR1) is a circular walk of 2.6 km or 4 km depending on the option; allow 1.5 to 2.5 hours, with a low level of difficulty. It starts at the junction of the castle access road, passes the old watermill (azenha) and the weir, follows both banks of the ribeira and then climbs up to the castle. It is lovely in spring, when the vegetation is still green and the rockroses are in flower. More details on Visit Algarve.

The village itself

Paderne means a white church, blue-trimmed façades, a grocer's, two cafés and a few restaurants where you can enjoy a cataplana or pork alentejana for the price of a starter in a resort. On the first Saturday of each month, from 8am to midday (sometimes until 2pm), the monthly market sets up next to the Estádio João Campos (Estrada de Paderne, N270): local produce, crafts, goat's cheese, figs and honey from the serra.

When to go

Spring (March to May) is the best time: the hills are green, the almond and then orange blossom fills the air, and temperatures stay mild for walking. Autumn works very well too. In July and August, visit the castle before 10am.
